EBIZ-2100 Assignment 3
What Is E-Biz?

Today, management information systems have come a long way from Grandma's cookbook, Baby. From the information technology revolution of recent decades, ebiz has evolved. It is the practical application of the new technologies for management information systems to all aspects of business activity.
What Do Others Say About Ebiz?

According to www.whatis.com, e-business (now commonly contracted to ebiz or e-biz) is "The conduct of business on the Internet, not only buying and selling, but also servicing customers and collaborating with business partners. One of the first to use the term was IBM, when in October 1997, it launched a thematic campaign built around the term...IBM also considers the development of intranets and extranets to be part of e-business."

The online textbook, Intro to e-biz, at ebiz.ssu.edu, defines e-biz as, "Doing many business activities electronically using Internet-centric technologies and applying them to manage day-to-day business processes."

Just as the technology is rapidly evolving, so is the terminology used to describe it. On CommerceNet's website at www.commerce.net, the description of eCommerce fits e-biz to a tee:

The use of internetworked computers to create and transform business relationships. Applications provide business solutions that:
  • Improve the quality of goods and services.
  • Increase the speed of service delivery.
  • Reduce the cost of business operations.
It is a new methodology of doing business in three focal areas:
  • Business-to-business
  • Business-to-consumer
  • Intra-business
It is most commonly associated with buying and selling information, products, and services via the Internet, but it is also used to transfer and share information within organizations through intranets to improve decision-making and eliminate duplication of effort. The new paradigm of eCommerce is built not just on transactions, but also on building, sustaining, and improving relationships, both existing and potential.
That's quite a mouthful, but you begin to see the almost limitless scope of e-biz applications.
