Identity Theft-In 2002 a dramatically high number of identity thefts had occurred.  Reported on PCWorld.com, November 27 article, Identity Theft Highlights Serious Security Flaws, an estimated 30,000 U.S consumers personal identification were accessed by an employee for Teledata Communications Industry, Philip Cummings.  Cummings, knowingly missed used TCI’s software that retrieves credit card information to steel personal credit history, account passwords and subscriber codes from TCI’s business customers, which include banking and mortgaging companies such as Ford Motor Credit.  Cummings was part of an identity theft ring based in New York; he was able to equip other members with TCI laptops and passwords in order to sell the information.The identity theft ring focused on attacking three major credit card monitoring companies, Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union.  Chris Kelly an analyst for Forrester Research, points out that the three credit card monitoring companies security was left vulnerable to insider attacks he believes the reason for the lax security is that “for the past several years consumer privacy attention has been focused on the internet”(Roberts).


 

Cyber Attacks-The Internet is also a place to wage political wars, in a recent article, Cyberterrorists sharpening their tools for online warfare, a computer programmer warned that he would release a computer virus, a new potent rogue program on the internet if the United States declared war on Iraq.  Melhacker, a Malaysian Muslim has been linked to several attacks such as the Melhack.B. virus that had been sent through e-mails to destroy files, it was titled, “Osama Bin Laden Comes Back!”.  Melhacker has also been linked to other hackers and virus writers in Pakistan and the Middle East in order to develop a new and improved weapon of attack.  The new virus has let to be unleashed to the public and possible affects are unknown due to the fact that Melhacker created the virus in a program “Scezda” that he developed.  Security experts warn that cyberterrorist have been and are continuing to increase activity as their know-how of technology increases.  This causes greater concern for the countries whose computers are Internet dependent, such as the United States(Schwartz).
