This is the best commercial bootleg of the Long Beach show. Extra effort went into this one.
There's something special about Past Invitation. True, it is just another Long Beach bootleg taken from the King Biscuit Flower Hour broadcast, but there are numerous reasons to give this one a second look/listen. If you've never heard the famous Long Beach concert, then you owe it to yourself to give this one a listen. There are several bootlegs taken from the KBFH CD but this one delivers more.
What makes this Long Beach bootleg stand out from the rest is that it features songs from the second broadcast of the show (The Best of the Biscuit broadcast in Nov. 1977). Sure it's still missing the guitar solo and This Time, but it has Television Politician, making this the first (and only) CD bootleg to include it.
This CD delivers on sound quality as well. It was obviously mastered from a better source tape than Alive or The Band From the Platinum Basement. In fact, I'd say it was mastered from the reel-to-reels that were sent to the radio stations for broadcast. And the editing is top notch. Great attention to detail was paid. It's better editing than the official KBFH CD. But on the down side, some of the talking between songs has been removed - something that I miss dearly. And if you want the songs in the same order they were performed, too bad. Peace of Mind is out of order.
The artwork is great and features on the cover one of the rarest images from Boston's past - the magazine advertisement annoucing the upcoming Don't Look Back album. Notice the number two on the front of the ship; this is because the album had not yet been named. Totally cool cover. One of my favorites. The back is a great professional shot of the band live in concert. I think the photo comes from the Japanese tour book. Inside the case, we see more band photos from the tour book, including one under the clear tray that holds the disc. Very nice artwork indeed, aside from the misspelling of "Television Polititian".
You just have to get this CD simply because it includes Television Politician. It does not disappoint and it is extremely interesting with the rare photos. Get it if you can find it.
