Don't Be Afraid

The longest, most complete boot from the Don't Look Back tour, but the sound is a little harsh.

It's not uncommon for more than one boot to be made from the same concert performance, but it is certainly rare when each bootleg comes from a different source tape. This is the case with JFK, the cousin of Cherry Blossom Tour. Each boot was made from an entirely different audience tape.

Just like Cherry Blossom, the set is long and features several unreleased tracks including the rarely performed Don't Be Afraid. There is only one short missing segment from the song This Time which totals about 35 seconds (which probably occured at the tape flip). Compared to Cherry Blossom, which is missing about three minutes, this boot is more complete.

The sound quality although excellent for a recording this old, is a bit harsh in the high end. However, a little EQ'ing could do the trick. There is absolutely no hiss to speak of, and it clearly sounds like the CD was made from the master tape. Like Cherry Blossom this is an audience tape. Unlike Cherry Blossom, however, the pitch is not too slow.

I particularly love the artwork which features several unique photos. My favorite, which is on the back side of the booklet, shows the band hangin' out on the sidewalk somewhere in Japan. Captions over their heads say "Oh! geisha-girl!", "Japan Fujiyama Kabuki!!" (hence the name of the CD), and "It's not my business." On the inside tray, there is a shot of the band members hanging out at a table in a restaraunt (? or possibly a hotel lobby). Inside the booklet, the photo is of the band live on stage which looks like it was taken from the tour book. There are also five photos taken in short succession of Tom playing guitar. The front and back covers of the boot show the Boston spaceship flying over a downtown metropolis (Paris?) - nicely done.

It'd be a tough choice between this boot and Cherry Blossom Tour. I suppose if you find either of these, you should pick it up. I like each one for their own different features. But if I had to choose one based solely on sound quality, I'd have to go with Cherry Blossom.
